Where the Mountains Meet the Sea

Discover Ravenglass…..

There are places in the Lake District where you come for the mountains.

There are places where you come for the coast.

And then there’s Ravenglass.

A small coastal village at the western edge of the Lake District, where the sea, rivers, mountains, railway and history all come together.

It’s somewhere you can arrive for a railway journey, wander along the coast, take the dog for a walk, discover a little history and finish the day with good food and a drink at The Ratty Arms.

🌊 Where the mountains meet the sea

Ravenglass has a character all of its own.

Look one way and you have the coast and estuary.

Look another and the landscape rises towards the mountains and valleys of the Western Lake District.

It’s a place where you don’t necessarily need a packed itinerary.

Sometimes the best part of a day in Ravenglass is simply wandering around, taking in the scenery and enjoying the atmosphere.

🚂 Start your journey at the railway

Ravenglass is home to the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway, affectionately known as the Ratty.

The railway takes you from the coast into Eskdale, giving you a completely different way to experience the Western Lake District.

But don’t make the mistake of treating Ravenglass as somewhere you simply arrive at, board the train and leave again.

Give yourself time to explore the village too.

Have a walk. Take in the estuary. Discover the local history. Stop for something to eat. Then continue your adventure.

🥾 Get outside

One of the best things about Ravenglass is how easy it is to combine a visit with some time outdoors.

There are walks around the village, along the coast and into the surrounding countryside, ranging from gentle strolls to longer adventures.

You don’t have to be an experienced fell walker. A short walk, some fresh air and a good view can be enough.

And if you’re bringing the dog, Ravenglass is a great place to explore together.

🏛️ A village with history

Ravenglass isn’t just beautiful, it has been an important place for a very long time.

The village has strong Roman connections, and the remains of the Roman Bath House provide a fascinating reminder of Ravenglass’s ancient past.

It’s another reason to slow down and explore rather than simply passing through.

You can combine history, walking, scenery and food without spending half the day travelling between destinations.

🍽️ And then there’s The Ratty Arms

After exploring Ravenglass, walking along the coast or travelling on the railway, eventually you’ll need somewhere to sit down.

That’s where we come in.

The Ratty Arms is right in the heart of Ravenglass, right at the Ravenglass train station.

We’re a family-run pub serving food and drinks, with a menu that brings together proper pub favourites, Mediterranean-inspired dishes, pizza and our ever-changing Ratty World Journey.

🌍 A different destination every week

The Ratty World Journey is our way of bringing a little bit of the world to Ravenglass.

Every week, our kitchen heads somewhere different.

One week might take you to Italy.

The next could be Egypt.

Then Greece, Mexico, India or somewhere completely unexpected.

You never quite know where the Ratty is going next.

And that’s the point.

You can come to Ravenglass for the railway, the coast or the countryside… and then take a culinary journey somewhere else entirely.
